Key Responsibilities

Policy & Protocol Adherence:

  • Follow all Health Center protocols, standing orders, and school policies to ensure safe, consistent, and legally compliant care for students.
  • Maintain awareness of updates to clinical procedures and participate in required training.

Medication Administration & Documentation:

  • Administer prescription and over-the-counter medications in accordance with providers’ orders and school policies.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all medication administration in Magnus, the electronic health record system.
  • Regularly communicate with pharmacies to resolve issues related to prescriptions, insurance, or delivery.
  • Maintain and update a shared medication refill spreadsheet with the local pharmacy.
  • Process delivered medications by verifying contents, organizing storage, and updating records appropriately.

Clinical Care:

  • Provide direct, evidence-based nursing care to students under the Director of Health Services’ standing orders and provider-specific directives.
  • Keep the Nurse Practitioner, who is on call 24/7, informed of all significant student health concerns, changes in condition, and emergencies within the Health Center.
  • Respond to injuries and illnesses, triage student needs, and escalate appropriately.
  • Communicate and coordinate with the school’s counseling staff and athletic trainers as needed to ensure comprehensive care and timely intervention.
  • Maintain current certification and proficiency in drug screening procedures for use in acute substance use or intoxication situations, in accordance with Health Center protocols and legal guidelines.

Care Coordination & Communication:

  • Collaborate with the Nurse Practitioner and outside providers to ensure continuity of care.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student health status, treatments, and follow-up care.
  • Serve as a liaison with faculty/staff, coaches, and advisors to support student health and well-being.

External Coordination:

  • Coordinate referrals and appointments with outside medical providers and the emergency department as needed.
  • Facilitate communication with local pharmacies for prescriptions and medication refills.

Record-Keeping & Compliance:

  • Maintain up-to-date, confidential health records in compliance with HIPAA and school policies in a timely manner.
  • Track immunizations, health forms, prescription forms, and visit records for residential and day students once uploaded to students’ electronic health record.

Chronic Condition Management:

  • Ensure that up-to-date, provider-issued action plans for chronic conditions such as asthma, allergies, diabetes, and other medical needs are received from students/families and properly filed.
  • Follow the action plans accurately when providing care during health events or emergencies.
  • Monitor adherence to action plans and support students in managing their conditions responsibly.
  • Provide relevant education to students and faculty/staff as needed to promote awareness and preparedness in the school community.

Emergency Response:

  • Provide emergency care within scope of practice and coordinate with counseling, the Director of Health Services, Campus Safety, and other relevant adults on campus, according to protocols.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness planning.

 

Qualifications

Education:

  • RN licensure required; BSN preferred.
  • Current BLS certification required.

Experience:

  • At least two years of nursing experience.
  • Prior experience in a residential school or college setting is preferred.

  • Proficient in electronic health record systems and basic technology platforms.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
